18 Years of Love: The Remarkable Journey of Ms. Cai and Her Sanctuary for 70 Cats

Ms. Cai never set out to be a cat rescuer. Her mission began 18 years ago on a bitter, snowy night when she spotted a pregnant stray hiding beneath her construction equipment. She tried to help, but the skittish cat vanished into the dark. By morning, she found the mother and her three newborn kittens frozen to death in the snow. That tragic moment shattered her heart and sparked a lifelong promise: No more cats would die like this under her watch.

Following her retirement, Ms. Cai turned her own life upside down to create a safe haven. Today, 70 rescued cats call her sanctuary home. To afford the rising costs of food and medicine, she made the ultimate sacrifice—downsizing from a large house to a small apartment, with every saved penny going toward the felines. She ensures they live with dignity, providing thick winter blankets, high-quality nutrition like steak and shrimp, and meticulously clean spaces that are scrubbed daily.

Caring for 70 cats is a grueling feat, especially for a 65-year-old managing her own health issues. Yet, Ms. Cai never slows down. Her mornings are spent on rigorous health checks for infections or illness; her afternoons are dedicated to laundry and sanitizing the living quarters; and her nights are often spent bottle-feeding orphaned kittens every few hours. For her, the exhaustion is secondary to the joy of seeing a sick cat return to health.

Ms. Cai’s impact extends beyond her walls as she educates her community on the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” philosophy. She is a fierce advocate for sterilization (spaying/neutering) as the only sustainable solution to feline homelessness. She also teaches neighbors how to spot early signs of common issues like diabetes or dental disease, empowering them to become proactive caregivers.

Her story is a powerful reminder that one individual can indeed change the world. Ms. Cai suggests that everyone can contribute in their own way: by fostering, donating supplies, volunteering time at local shelters, or simply spreading the word about responsible pet ownership. “Every cat you save purrs ‘thank you’ in their own way,” Ms. Cai says. “And every single one of those lives matters.”

At Bory Pet, we are humbled by Ms. Cai’s 18-year labor of love. Through our Compassionate Fund, we aim to support selfless rescuers like her who embody the true spirit of animal welfare. Her dedication inspires our manufacturing standards—ensuring that the products we create contribute to a clean, healthy, and dignified life for every cat, whether in a home or a sanctuary.
